First Steps: Download & Installation

How to download MetaTrader 4 or MetaTrader 5, install them on your computer and connect your first trading account.

1. Choose Your Broker

MetaTrader is not standalone — you need a broker to access the market. Your broker will provide the login credentials (server, account number, password) you will use to connect the platform.

Recommendation: If you do not yet have a broker, read our guide on how to choose a broker to select a regulated broker with good conditions. Many brokers offer a free demo account.

2. Download MetaTrader

You have two options to download the platform:

MetaTrader is available for Windows (desktop), Mac (via Wine or emulator), iOS (App Store) and Android (Google Play).

3. Install the Platform

The installation is straightforward:

  1. Run the downloaded file (.exe on Windows)
  2. Accept the licence terms
  3. Choose the installation folder (or use the default)
  4. Click "Install" and wait for it to finish
  5. The platform will open automatically when done

4. Connect Your Account

When you open MT4/MT5 for the first time, a window will appear to connect an account. If it does not, go to File → Connect to Trading Account.

  1. Select your broker in the server search field
  2. Enter your account number (login)
  3. Enter your password
  4. Select the correct server (demo or live)
  5. Check "Save password" and click "Login"
Tip: To start, always use a demo account. Your broker provides demo login credentials when you register — they are different from your live account credentials.

5. Open Your First Chart

Once connected, you will see the Market Watch panel on the left with available currency pairs. To open a chart:

  1. Find the pair you want in the Market Watch panel
  2. Double-click the pair, or drag it to the chart area
  3. The chart opens with the default timeframe (H1)
  4. Change the timeframe using the M1, M5, M15, H1, H4, D1 buttons...
Useful shortcuts: Ctrl+N (new chart), F5 (market watch), Ctrl+G (grid), F8 (chart properties)
