How to Use Indicators in MetaTrader
Learn how to add, configure and remove technical indicators in MT4/MT5, and discover the most widely used indicators among professional traders.
How to Add an Indicator
There are several ways to add indicators to the chart:
- From the Insert menu: Menu → Insert → Indicators → choose the category and indicator.
- From the Navigator: Navigator panel (Ctrl+N) → expand "Indicators" → drag the indicator onto the chart.
Most Used Indicators in Forex
- Moving Average (MA). Indicators → Trend → Moving Average. Recommended settings: Period 200, Type EMA or SMA, Apply to Close. Also add EMA 50 for golden/death cross signals.
- RSI (Relative Strength Index). Indicators → Oscillators → Relative Strength Index. Setting: Period 14. Key levels: 70 (overbought), 30 (oversold). Look for price divergences for high-probability signals.
- MACD (Moving Average Convergence Divergence). Indicators → Oscillators → MACD. Standard settings: 12, 26, 9. Useful for identifying trend changes and divergences. The MACD/signal line crossover generates entries.
- Bollinger Bands. Indicators → Trend → Bollinger Bands. Settings: Period 20, Deviation 2. The three bands (upper, middle, lower) measure volatility. Price tends to revert to the mean after touching the outer bands.
Installing Custom Indicators
- Download the indicator file (.ex4 for MT4, .ex5 for MT5)
- In MetaTrader: menu File → Open Data Folder
- Navigate to the MQL4/Indicators (or MQL5/Indicators in MT5)
- Copy the indicator file into that folder
- Restart MetaTrader or right-click the Navigator → "Refresh"
- The indicator will appear in the Navigator under "Custom Indicators"
Removing an Indicator from the Chart
- Right-click the chart → "Indicators List" → select and delete.
- Or right-click directly on the indicator in the chart → "Delete Indicator".
Tip on indicators: Less is more. Adding too many indicators creates "analysis paralysis". Use a maximum of 2-3 complementary indicators: one trend indicator + one momentum indicator is enough for most strategies.
